BUNGUBOX Original Ink History

BUNGUBOX Original Bottle Ink History

2009

February

[Omaezaki Sunset]

The inspiration for this ink comes from the color of the sun setting over the cape of Omaezaki, the southernmost point of Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a delicate shade that is neither strictly red nor orange.

As the very first BUNGUBOX original ink, it was initially pre-sold to the first 12 customers in December 2008, before becoming available for regular sale in February of the following year. At the time of its release, it was sold in a 50ml bottle for 2,100 yen.

June

[Sea Ink (formerly Ruri Sea)]

Inspired by the ocean horizon of Omaezaki, "Ruri Sea" (now Sea Ink) embodies the color of lapis lazuli. It is a deep shade that is neither strictly blue nor navy.

[Sky Ink (formerly Ruri Sky)]

Inspired by the sky above the ocean horizon at Omaezaki, this "Sky" color is a pale ultramarine. It is a pale and gentle blue, also known as the color of forget-me-nots or rurikusa flowers.

October

[Tea Green Omaezaki]

Tea harvested on the 88th day after the first day of spring is considered to be of premium quality and exceptionally delicious. This color captures the essence of that special 88th-day tea, expressed with a slightly subdued, astringent tone.

In March 2013, the ink was renamed to [BUNGBOX88].

[Sweet Potato Yellow]

[Sweet Potato Purple]

These inks made their debut in October of that same year at the "Food Culture Sweet Potato Summit" during the 24th National Cultural Festival, Shizuoka 2009.

The history of sweet potatoes in Omaezaki runs deep. During the Edo period, in 1766, an official ship of the Satsuma Domain named Toyotokumaru ran aground off the coast of Omaezaki. Twenty-four crew members were rescued by Osawa Gon'emon (1694–1778), a local headman of Futatsuya, and his son.

Declining a monetary reward of 20 ryo from the Satsuma Domain, Gon'emon was instead gifted three varieties of sweet potatoes and taught the methods to cultivate them. This historical event is said to have sparked the widespread cultivation of sweet potatoes in the Enshu region of Shizuoka Prefecture (primarily the western part of the prefecture facing the Enshu-nada coast).

Inspired by an Omaezaki sweet potato variety called Hamakomachi, these colors were created. The "Flesh" is a shade that is neither purely yellow nor orange, while the "Skin" is a color that is neither simply purple nor brown.

After a period where sales were suspended, the inks made a limited-edition return in the autumn of 2020, presented in BUNGUBOX's original "ink tells more" bottles.

December

[Holy Night]

Although it is a deep blue, this color is infinitely close to black. The ink was created with the image of a hint of blue melting into jet black.

2010

January

[Sweet Love Pink]

With a vivid pink color like no other, this ink was incredibly cute and wildly popular.

In February 2025, it made its grand return in our signature heel-shaped bottle! We hope you will enjoy this ink in its new bottle from now on. However, please be warned—the sweet temptation of this pink can be delightfully addictive.

We dedicate this ink to you, the true pink lover for whom there is never such a thing as "too much pink."

[Valentine's Choco Brown]

Both inks were originally released as limited seasonal editions for Valentine's Day. With its cute, vivid pink alongside the Choco Brown—a color crafted to be the ultimate chocolate shade—many customers enjoyed purchasing them as a pair.

In 2020, [Sweet Love Pink] was re-released in a limited batch to commemorate the launch of the original fountain pen, [Sweet Love Pink 2020]. Thanks to its enthusiastic reception, all 100 bottles sold out completely.

March

[The ink of Witch]

Created around the concept of "an ink enchanted by a mischievous witch," this magical ink was born in this year. Immediately upon writing, it appears black, but as time passes, it transforms into purple. Even today, it continues to enjoy immense popularity.

[HAPPINESS]

Aiming for a green that falls right between "Menthe"—a traditional French color inspired by mint—and the green famous for its use by the Verona-born Italian painter Veronese, this ink was created with the image of fresh, vibrant grassland green.

April

[L'Amant]

The name of this ink carries the sentiment of "L'Amant"—a lover, or a deeply cherished person. Its beautiful reddish-purple is inspired by "Cardinal," the rich color of the vestments worn by Catholic cardinals. Thus, a color uniquely suited for expressing one's heartfelt feelings to a loved one was born.

May

[Dandyism]

Featuring Sherlock Holmes as the motif for its label, this ink adopts a deep, dark green called "Vert Noir" to embody the very spirit of dandyism.

[June bride Something blue]

Released on May 28, 2010, this ink drew inspiration from two beloved traditions. The first is "Something Four"—an ancient European custom holding that a bride will find happiness if she wears something blue on her wedding day. The second is "June Bride"—the belief that marrying in June brings lifelong happiness, as Juno, wife of Jupiter in Roman mythology, is the protector of marriage.

By adding a translucent clarity to [Blue Orient], this exquisite shade of blue was created, and it continues to enjoy great popularity to this day.

June

[Melancholic Gray (but…)]

Released on June 24, 2010, this gentle gray ink was born as an intermediate shade between two traditional Japanese gray tones, Fukagawa-nezu (a muted, bluish-gray) and Su-nezu (a pure, natural gray). It offers a soothing color, filled with hope even on a rainy day.

July

[BUNGUBOX BLUE BLACK (4B)]

This ink takes its name from the four "B"s in its initials: BUNGUBOX BLUE BLACK. It was created with the aim of achieving a perfect intermediate shade between the traditional Japanese color Koi-ai (deep indigo) and the traditional French color Agate (the color of the agate stone).

The playful label design is full of charm, featuring a clever pun connecting the letter "B" with a buzzing "BEE."

August

[Lycoris Red]

This ink was crafted in the image of the striking red of the manjushage (red spider lily)—a hue so vivid and intense it feels as though it is burning with the very flame of all life.

[Music Black]

Gentle on the eyes, yet leaving an indelible impression—this ink was crafted in the image of the distinct black of musical notes dancing across a staff.

September

[Nostalgia]

"Nostalgia"—a profound yearning for a distant hometown, or a fond longing for days gone by. This ink was crafted in the image of a faded, sepia-toned photograph that awakens these very emotions.

October

[Icho]

This ink is inspired by a beautiful poem by the renowned Meiji-era poet, Akiko Yosano:
"Like tiny golden birds, ginkgo leaves flutter down upon a sunset hill."
It captures the breathtaking and nostalgic scenery of a brilliant golden autumn. As a special artistic touch, the delicate veins of the ginkgo leaves depicted on the bottle's label are gracefully tinted with another of our original colors, [Omaezaki Sunset] ink.

December

[Kotohogi Kurenai]

Originally released as a limited edition ink named [2010 Shu Vermilion], this ink features a stunningly clear and translucent crimson hue. In Japanese tradition, this radiant shade of red is highly auspicious. It beautifully captures the spirit of kotohogi—the joyous celebration of the New Year and the welcoming of good fortune.

February

[Tsuyuhikari]

Blessed with a mild climate, Omaezaki is famous for harvesting the very first shincha (early spring tea) in Shizuoka Prefecture. This ink perfectly captures the vivid, beautiful green of "Tsuyuhikari"—a new and exquisite variety of Omaezaki tea born in the spring of 2009. It is a refreshing shade that brings the vibrant energy and crispness of freshly picked tea leaves directly to your page.

April

[Hatsukoi / First Love] BUNGUBOX SAPPHIRE

Launched on April 15, 2011, this is the proud flagship original ink of BUNGUBOX.
Its inspiration lies in the legendary "Penman Sapphire" by the British luxury pen manufacturer, Parker—a phantom ink that was sadly discontinued despite the enduring popularity of its breathtaking blue.
The name "Hatsukoi" translates to "First Love." It was born from the profound passion of our founder and manager, Kaoru, who fell instantly in love the very moment she laid eyes on that mesmerizing shade.
Capturing that unforgettable emotion, this is the very first ink in our "Penman Series," dedicated to faithfully recreating that beloved and historic color.

July

[Tears of a Clown] BUNGUBOX RUBY

As the second installment in our "Penman Series," which faithfully recreates historic Parker ink colors, this ink pays homage to Penman Ruby—a deep, rich shade closely resembling a sophisticated Bordeaux.
This profound color inspired the poignant concept of "Tears of a Clown": the secret, heartfelt tears that a jester never reveals to the audience.
The bottle's label beautifully captures this melancholic story, illustrating a clown with a comical yet quietly sorrowful expression, shedding a single, hidden tear.

[Norwegian Wood]

The third installment in our "Penman Series," which faithfully recreates historic Parker ink colors, pays homage to Penman Emerald—a remarkably deep and vivid green.
This beautiful shade is inspired by the iconic Beatles' song, [Norwegian Wood].
It masterfully blends the essence of the timeless melody with the profound, mysterious greens of the deep Norwegian forests, where mythical trolls are said to reside. This ink perfectly encapsulates the enchanting and mystical atmosphere of those ancient woods.

October

[Piano Mahogany]

The fourth installment in our "Penman Series," which faithfully recreates historic Parker ink colors, pays homage to Penman Mocha—a beautifully rich, reddish-brown.
This elegant shade evokes nostalgic memories of a childhood dream: a magnificent mahogany piano.
Along with the revival of this classic color, we hope this ink allows you to experience that same youthful heartbeat of excitement and wonder every time you put your pen to paper.

December

[BUNGUBOX BLACK]

Launched on December 20, 2011, this is the definitive "BUNGUBOX Black." It was brought to life after countless trials and careful prototyping in collaboration with the esteemed ink blender, Osamu Ishimaru.
Adding a touch of playful charm to this classic color, the bottle's label features the iconic black spots of a Dalmatian, inspired by the beloved classic tale, 101 Dalmatians.

February

[Hamanako Fresh Mikan / Fresh Mandarin of Lake Hamana]

The northern region of Hamamatsu is blessed with a warm climate, abundant sunshine, and well-drained soil—the absolute perfect conditions for cultivating delicious mandarin oranges (mikan).
Thanks to this ideal environment, the mikan grown in this region are celebrated nationwide for their exceptional quality.
Created as a special "local ink" to honor Hamamatsu, this vibrant and juicy orange hue perfectly captures the refreshing essence of freshly picked mikan, making it one of our most beloved original inks.

[KABAYAKI of the Hamanako Eel]

Hamamatsu is renowned for its exceptional eel, and this unprecedented ink pays tribute to the city's most iconic culinary treasure: Kabayaki (grilled eel glazed in a rich, sweet soy sauce).
Much like [Hamanako Fresh Mikan], this special "local ink" was originally crafted to celebrate the opening of the BUNGUBOX Hamamatsu store. It beautifully captures the deep, glossy, and mouth-watering brown hue of the savory glaze.
Even after its production was temporarily paused, we received an outpouring of passionate requests for its return. In response to our fans' unwavering love, we proudly revived this beloved color just in time for Doyo no Ushi no Hi (Midsummer Day of the Ox) on July 20, 2023—a traditional Japanese day dedicated to eating eel for vitality.

May

[Matador Red]

A "Matador" is a heroic Spanish bullfighter. This profoundly deep crimson ink captures the striking image of the muleta—the iconic red cloth wielded gracefully in the arena. More than just a beautiful color, it embodies the fiery fighting spirit, burning passion, and immense power of a brave matador facing a fierce bull.
Though its production was temporarily paused, we brought this beloved shade back as a limited revival in 2021 to celebrate the release of our original fountain pen bearing the same majestic name.

[Mother] BUNGUBOX PINK

This exquisite pink ink is inspired by the universal image of a "Mother"—a presence that is wonderfully gentle and soft, yet defined by an unbreakable inner strength and absolute devotion.
Reflecting this profound love, the hue appears visually tender and soothing, while leaving a deep, lasting impression on every page it graces.

July

[Sakanamachi Horoyoi / Sakanamachi Tipsy]

This charming purple-gray ink is inspired by Sakanamachi in Hamamatsu City, the vibrant and historic neighborhood where BUNGUBOX first opened its doors on February 17th of that year.
The name gracefully translates to "tipsy," paying homage to the lively Horoyoi Matsuri (Tipsy Festival) held in the district several times a year. Adding a touch of local nostalgia, the bottle's label features a delightful illustration of a flounder. This charming motif was actually taken from the unique design carved into the manhole cover that sat right in front of our very first store.

December

[LUMINOUS] Fluorescent Green

True to its majestic name, which evokes images of a radiant and brilliant glow, this ink represents BUNGUBOX's very first foray into fluorescent colors.
This vibrant, eye-catching green is not only striking on the page but also exceptionally practical. It serves beautifully as a fountain pen highlighter ink, ready to brilliantly illuminate your most important words and ideas.

[Shusse Ink / Yoroi Black]

This ink draws profound inspiration from Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu, the legendary shogun celebrated as the "Success Warlord." Paying homage to both his historic triumphs and his famous pragmatism, this "Yoroi Black" (Armor Black) ink beautifully replicates the deep, imposing shade of his battle armor.
It lays down as a gorgeously glossy and lustrous black. Once dry, it reveals a captivating secret: depending on the angle of the light, a subtle and elegant reddish-purple sheen emerges.
Carrying the powerful blessings of Ieyasu's legendary victories, it became highly popular as an auspicious lucky charm for business endeavors, university entrance exams, and successful job hunting.

March

[BUNGUBOX 88] Formerly known as Tea Green Omaezaki

In Japanese tea culture, Hachijuhachiya (the 88th night of spring) is a deeply revered time. Tea leaves harvested on this specific day are celebrated as being of exceptionally high quality and extraordinarily delicious. This ink captures the essence of that premium tea, presenting a deep, sophisticated green with a hint of elegant astringency.
Furthermore, the number "88" in its name carries a highly auspicious meaning in Japan. It symbolizes suehirogari—a shape that broadens toward the base, representing infinite prosperity, growth, and ever-expanding good fortune.

November

[Soleil]

"Soleil"—the sun. It is the magnificent celestial presence that illuminates every corner of the earth and nurtures all life.

When first applied to paper, it glows with a brilliant brightness. Then, as time passes, the ink gracefully settles into a calm and comforting yellow, allowing you to enjoy the passage of time on the page.

December

[Aofuji / Blue Fuji]

Originally, this beautiful ink made its debut as a New Year exclusive set named [Hatsuyume Aofuji] (The First Dream of Blue Fuji), alongside [FUJIYAMA BLUE] and [Kotohogi Kurenai]. Following its limited release, we received an overwhelming chorus of passionate requests from fans wishing to purchase it individually. Listening to these devoted voices, we are proud to offer this auspicious and breathtaking blue as a permanent addition to our standard lineup under the name [Aofuji].

[FUJIYAMA BLUE]

It beautifully expresses the ever-changing colors of the sacred mountain as the daylight shifts and the seasons turn. While sharing the same majestic muse, it offers a distinctly different, yet equally captivating, shade of blue compared to [Aofuji]—allowing you to experience another breathtaking facet of Mount Fuji's timeless beauty on your pages.

Upon touching paper, the ink flows as a bright, sun-kissed orange reminiscent of fresh orchard fruit. Then, through the quiet alchemy of oxidation, it gradually matures before your eyes into a rich, contemplative brandy-brown, evoking vintage spirits gently swirled in crystal glassware.
Because its nuance subtly shifts depending on the paper you choose, writing with this ink becomes an unhurried sensory ritual—inviting you to savor your thoughts just like lingering over a warm, luxurious post-dinner digestif.

Harvested from the serene transition of late autumn into the crisp calm of early winter, Shuto Bancha is a beloved, comforting staple of Japanese tea culture—particularly in Shizuoka, the cherished homeland of BUNGUBOX.
Unlike early spring flushes known for their sharp, grassy vivacity, these mature tea leaves are naturally low in caffeine and gentle in tannins. Bathed in the soft slant of seasonal sunlight, they yield a soothing brew celebrated for its round, mellow warmth, subtle nutty sweetness, and remarkably clean, refreshing finish—delightful whether served piping hot or cold-steeped over ice.
Translating that tranquil harmony onto the page, this ink lays down a quiet, grounded earthy green with delicate amber-olive undertones. Each contemplative stroke feels like wrapping your hands around a warm ceramic cup on a quiet afternoon, inviting mindful comfort and gentle stillness into your daily writing.

[Kabayaki]

Specially unveiled to celebrate the Tokyo International Pen Show 2025, this savory, evocative ink pays a flavorful homage to Hamamatsu, Shizuoka—the revered birthplace of BUNGUBOX and Japan’s capital of freshwater eel.
First debuted in 2012, this beloved culinary-inspired color draws its spirit from the artisanal tradition of Kabayaki: tender eel slow-grilled over fragrant charcoal and repeatedly basted in a rich, caramelized, savory-sweet glaze. Translating that mouthwatering gloss onto the page, the ink reveals a luxurious, deep glazed-brown with luscious, warm amber undertones—reminiscent of simmering secret sauces and polished lacquerware.
Now adorned in an elegant new packaging with a refreshed label design, [Kabayaki] returns to invite you to savor the rich heritage, artisanal dedication, and warm hospitality of our hometown with every stroke of your pen.

[Nagori Sakura]

As the peak of cherry blossom season begins its gentle, bittersweet descent, the falling petals reveal a quiet yet profoundly moving drama. In these parting moments, the innermost heart of each blossom deepens into an intense, rich crimson-rose, while tender, sunlit young leaves begin to unfurl—each asserting its vibrant presence as if reluctant to bid farewell to spring.
In Japanese aesthetics, the concept of nagori (なごり) celebrates the lingering traces and nostalgic beauty of a season just before it departs. Inspired by this transient spectacle, [Nagori Sakura] captures the passionate, bittersweet splendor of the "lingering sakura" as it casts its luminous final glow.
Flowing from your pen with the nuanced depth of petal-hearts tinged with nascent green, this ink leaves a breathtaking testament to impermanence, honoring the poignant art of letting go.
