History of BUNGUBOX Original Fountain Pen

History of BUNGUBOX Original Fountain Pen

We would like to introduce a number of original fountain pens that Bungubox has released to date.

Happy Yellow Fountain Pen - [April 2010] JPY 22,000

“The Yellow Fountain Pen of Happiness” marked the release of BUNGUBOX’s very first original fountain pen. It was created from store manager Kaoru’s heartfelt wish to give such a pen to her late mother.

Based on the Sailor 1911 Standard, the cap ring was engraved with the message “I wish you a lot of happiness.”

The fountain pen was presented as a three-piece set with the original miniature picture book The Story of Bungufox and the original bottled ink “Happiness.” The set was limited to 30.

Dandyism × FDM - [October 2010] JPY 35,200

Following the release of the "Dandyism" bottled ink in May of the same year, BUNGUBOX launched the "Dandyism x FDM" fountain pen.

This pen was a deep green, inspired by the color of the ink. It's based on the Sailor Professional Gear model, with a special feature: the "FDM" nib. This stands for "Fude De Mannen" ("Fountain Pen as a Brush") and is a unique 21k gold nib from Sailor, designed to create a variety of line widths depending on the writing angle, similar to a brush.

These were a limited edition of only 30 pens.

Woman - [October 2010] JPY 33,000

Around the same time as the release of the "Dandyism x FDM," BUNGUBOX announced the "WOMAN" fountain pen. It features a reddish-purple body inspired by the original bottled ink, "La'mant."

This pen holds a sincere wish: for women to shine even brighter! Furthermore, a portion of the proceeds from its sales was donated to a Pink Ribbon organization.

Based on the Sailor Professional Gear Pink Gold model, it was a limited edition of 30 pens.

First Love - [June 2012] JPY 121,000

This fountain pen was conceived to hold BUNGUBOX's most popular and beautiful blue ink, "Hatsukoi" (First Love).

The blue stripes were commissioned to Takuya Hino, a Maki-e artisan from Wajima. He meticulously inlaid gradient blue lacquer, stripe by stripe, into the ribbed barrel. Applying multiple coats and polishing it to perfection, the result is a true masterpiece.

The cap ring is engraved with the French phrase "Premier amour" (First Love).

Based on the Sailor Professional Gear Gathered model, it was a strictly limited edition of only 20 pens.

Another First Love - [June 2012] JPY 19,800

This fountain pen features the same translucent white barrel as the "First Love" pen, with the finial adorned in a matching Raden (mother-of-pearl) ivy leaf motif.

Offered at an accessible price point, it sold out almost instantly. The cap ring is elegantly engraved with the same message found on the "Happy Yellow Fountain Pen": "I wish you a lot of happiness."

Based on the Sailor Professional Gear Slim model, it was a limited edition of 45 pens.

Norwegian Wood - [October 2012] JPY 41,800

This fountain pen was created specifically for the original ink, "Norwegian Wood."

The deep, translucent green barrel features fine, sparkling glitter, evoking the image of a Norwegian forest in summer. In contrast, the gunmetal nib and cap ring conjure the atmosphere of a frozen winter forest.

The barrel is beautifully blind-engraved with the words "Norwegian wood" in an elegant calligraphy font.

Based on the Sailor 1911 Realo model, it was a limited edition of 50 pens.

Shandy Gaff - [December 2012] JPY 14,520

A "Shandy Gaff" is a cocktail made by mixing beer with ginger ale. BUNGUBOX recreated this image in the pen's barrel color, producing two versions: gold trim and silver trim.

Released in the lead-up to Christmas, they sold out almost instantly. The cap ring is elegantly engraved with the same message featured on the "Happy Yellow Fountain Pen": "I wish you a lot of happiness."

Based on the Sailor 1911 Standard model, this was a limited edition of 25 pens for each

Canneberge - [March 2013] JPY 30,800

This fountain pen features a beautifully sparkling barrel, matching the color of the original ink, "The Clown's Tears."

"Canneberge" is the French word for cranberry. Cranberries are known to be a favorite fruit of cranes, which are a traditional symbol of good fortune in Japan. This auspicious connection makes the pen perfect for celebrating special occasions.

The barrel is elegantly blind-engraved with the name "Canneberge" in a beautiful calligraphy font.

Based on the Sailor 1911 Large model, the initial release was a limited edition of 35 pens.

Kurogaki (Black Persimmon) - [April 2013] JPY 132,000

This was BUNGUBOX’s first original fountain pen featuring a luxury wooden barrel.

Exuding elegance and a profound presence, every single pen boasts a completely unique wood grain pattern, making it a highly coveted piece.

Based on the Sailor 1911 Large model, the initial release was strictly limited to 18 pens.

Ebon (Ebony) - [June 2013] JPY 110,000

The barrel is elegantly blind-engraved with the word "Soleil" in a beautiful calligraphy font.

Based on the Sailor Professional Gear Realo model, the initial release was limited to 50 pens.

Capless Decimo "Thé" - [April 2014] JPY 23,100

This retractable fountain pen marked BUNGUBOX’s first collaboration with Pilot.

Tea is one of Shizuoka Prefecture’s most celebrated agricultural products. The barrel was inspired by the contrast of green and shadow across the tea fields during Hachijuhachiya, the traditional 88th night of spring.

The clip is engraved with “thé,” the French word for tea.

Based on the Pilot Capless Decimo, this special edition was limited to 100 pens.

Norwegian Wood 2014 - [August 2014] JPY 35,200

This fountain pen was created as a slightly modified version of the highly acclaimed “Norwegian Wood,” originally released in 2012.

Born from a three-year dream to create a fountain pen that embodies Hamamatsu, the City of Musical Instruments, this remarkable pen finally brought that vision to life.

True to its name, it transforms the image of a mahogany piano into a fountain pen, becoming, in a sense, a portable mahogany piano. Its gleaming barrel features a high-gloss piano finish, while the cap ring is engraved with a piano keyboard motif. Even the cap threads were specially crafted.

Sharing the same form as the Sailor Professional Gear Micarta, this exceptionally rare fountain pen was unlike any other. Limited to 20 pens.

The Witch - [August 2015] JPY 22,000

The barrel appeared reddish-purple yet almost black. The finial featured Raden (mother-of-pearl) work inspired by a witch’s hat, while the cap ring was engraved with the incantation “Hocus pocus Hocus pocus.”

A true “witch’s fountain pen,” it sold out almost immediately after its release. Based on the Sailor Professional Gear Slim, this edition was limited to 100 pens.

Capless Fountain Pen "Energeia" - [November 2015] JPY 23,100

The second BUNGUBOX original Capless is a fountain pen brimming with energy, featuring beautiful orange marbling set off by striking gold trim.

“Energeia” is a Greek word from which the familiar term “energy” is derived. Energy can mean the capacity to do work, the willpower and vitality to accomplish something, or the power held within the body as a source of activity.

This fountain pen is so full of power that simply holding it will fill you with energy.

Based on the Pilot Capless, this edition was limited to 100 pens.

Love Pink - [March 2016] JPY 22,000

This fountain pen brings the image of the original bottled ink “SWEET LOVE PINK” to life.

The cute, sweet pink barrel shimmers beautifully with glitter, while black IP finishes on the clip, cap ring, and nib provide a deliberate contrast. The gunmetal trim adds a striking edge to the sweetness, and the cap ring is engraved with the message, “I wish you a lot of happiness!”

The finial of each pen features a clover, a symbol of happiness, individually crafted from cut blue-green abalone shell. Each piece was affixed with lacquer, surrounded with additional layers of lacquer, and carefully polished to reveal the Raden clover design in a togidashi maki-e finish.

Based on the Sailor Professional Gear Slim, this edition was limited to 100 pens.

The cap featured the same special threading design used for Sailor’s 80th Anniversary fountain pen.

The Witch Second - [October 2016] JPY 30,800

This was the second edition of “The Witch,” a fountain pen that brought to life the image of “The ink of Witch,” one of BUNGUBOX’s most popular original inks.

The main differences from the first edition were its larger size and the Raden (mother-of-pearl) work on the finial. The cap ring was now engraved with “Hocus Pocus” three times, an English equivalent of the Japanese magic phrase “chichin puipui,” giving the witch’s power an extra boost.

Based on the Sailor Professional Gear, this edition was limited to 100 pens.

Holy Night - [November 2016] JPY 22,000

This fountain pen brings the image of the original ink “Holy Night” to life.

Created in an original resin color that recreates the ink’s deep shade, its blue barrel appears almost black. Countless specks of fine glitter are elegantly scattered across the barrel like stars in a sacred night sky.

The nib, clip, and cap ring are all finished in black IP, further deepening the impression of the night sky. The cap ring is engraved with the message “ Silent Night Holy Night from BB.”

“Bon Voyage” is a French expression used to wish someone a wonderful journey, while “BB” is a play on BUNGUBOX and BABY.

The barrel evokes a view from high in the sky, with the ocean glimpsed through gaps in the clouds. Clouds float above a beautiful sea rendered in varying shades of blue, while the color of the BUNGUBOX logo resembles a tiny piece of land below.

Each version was limited to 100 pens.
