Collection: Ink tells more (Irongall)

What is iron gall ink?

It is a water-soluble ink that contains a combination of tannin, a plant-derived component found in tea leaves and iron.  These materials oxidize when they are exposed to air, giving them water and light resistance for greater durability.  The oxidization process also causes a color change, gradually turning the vivid color of the ink to a deeper blackish hue over time.  Please enjoy the process of this color change.

[Points of caution when using iron gall ink]

  • Similar to ordinary fountain pen ink, please wash your pen well when changing inks.
  • If stains remain in your pen/converter, dissolve some vineger in a glass of water and soak the stained area in the water to wash.
  • While there should be no problem with leaving iron gall ink in your pen, we recommend you clean your pen periodically.  If you will not be using your pen for an extended period of time, we suggest you empty the ink from your pen and store it in a clean state.
  • We will not be responsible for any damage caused to your pen by this ink.  While the chances of damage are rare, please be responsible for the use of this ink with your pens.
