Niigata Lacquerware: A Treasure Trove of Diverse Designs
Niigata Lacquerware refers to lacquerware produced around Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. During the Edo period, Niigata was a vital trading hub where ships frequently called, bringing a diverse array of cultures via both land and sea routes. The region had extensive sales channels reaching Edo, Osaka, and even Hokkaido, making it historically significant for commodity trade. Lacquerware culture took root in Niigata in the early Edo period, and by the late Edo period, it was recognized as one of Japan's leading lacquerware production centers.
What makes Niigata-produced lacquerware stand out is its wide variety of colors and patterns, earning it the moniker "a treasure trove of diverse coatings (kawari-nuri no houko)." This richness is attributed to Niigata's role as a major collection and distribution point for goods, attracting people and items from all over Japan and fostering a vibrant lacquerware culture.

Ishime-nuri (Stone-grain Coating): Durable and Unique Texture
The "Ishime-nuri" technique expresses the rough texture of stone. This creates a hard coating that is resistant to scratches on the surface.

Lacquer Coating on Metal: A Breakthrough in Craftsmanship
Traditionally, metal surfaces were considered unsuitable for lacquer coating due to their low absorbency and poor drying properties. However, through several years of trial and error—including careful selection and blending of materials, modifications to undercoating methods, and changes to other processing steps—craftsmen finally succeeded in applying lacquer to metal. The warm "Ishime-nuri" tactile sensation applied to the base metal writing instrument is truly unique.
To promote Niigata City's traditional craft of Niigata Lacquerware globally, a square plate featuring the same delicate silver (oboro-gin-nuri) color adopted in this pen was used at a dinner party and presented as a commemorative gift to ministers from various countries during the G7 Niigata Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors' Meeting held in Niigata City in May 2023.

CYLINT Series: Everyday Writing Instruments with Artistic Finishes.

The CYLINT Series is a collection of writing instruments, including fountain pens and ballpoint pens, that feature surface decorations on a metal base, making them suitable for everyday use. The name CYLINT is a portmanteau of "CYLINDER" (referring to the cylindrical shape) and "INT" from "Intelligent."
